Explore the ecology of Highstead's 190-acre preserve and see the natural and semi-natural plant habitats of southwestern Connecticut, including an oak forest, mesic forest, forested wetland, and pollinator meadow that are home to plant, bird, and mammal species of special concern. In addition, see some of Highstead's native plant collections, field research sites, and naturally designed landscapes and learn about the work with ecotype seeds.

The walk will be led by Highstead Executive Director Geordie Elkins.

The walk is about 1 mile on hilly, woodland paths, so please wear sturdy walking shoes.

About Highstead:

Highstead is a regional conservation and ecological non-profit based in Redding, Conn., dedicated to increasing the pace of land protection in New England through science, sound stewardship, and collaboration with diverse partners. Highstead’s preserve comprises more than 100 beautiful acres of largely unmanaged woodland and wetland habitat, as well as managed fields and meadows.

Highstead works three main program areas: ecological research at both our Redding headquarters and throughout the region; we steward the land and work with native plants through the Northeast Seed Network; and we facilitate conservation partnerships comprised of non-profits, universities, and government agencies through the Regional Conservation Partnership (RCP) Network, which supports the more than 50 RCPs throughout the Northeast.
